Only found off the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand, the Maui dolphin is one of the most critically endangered species of this day.

As a result of set netting, trawling netting, and even boating, the 2011 population count was a dangerously low 55, spurring a select group of marine mammal researchers and the people of New Zealand to make a conscious effort to restore the species. A 2016 estimate of 63 Māui dolphins is encouraging; it suggests the population has not declined since the previous survey and that changes implemented by the New Zealand government are helping.

The new population count brings hope for the future of the dolphins, but there is more to be done.
